Just came across them reciently. I've been watching youtube videos of andadura racing in PR, I see mention of them being derived from the paso fino relativly reciently. Are they a cross with something else, or just a selection for a certain trait? That speed gait looks like the flying pace of the icelandic. So what advantage does the pace have over a 4 beat gait? faster? Looks like a rougher ride.
Andadura is one of the few gaits perform by the pure puertorican horse, as a matter of fact is one of the fastest besides the paso largo. Some of the ppr horses have that extreme gait but not all of them, you’ll never know until you let the horse fly on that gait, if he engage in the andadura once then he could be train to run in that gait. Some horses don’t inherit the andadura and some could have it and the owner never know because they ride at fino all the time.
The ppr horses of the past, (18 century) were riding at the commemoration of the saint of San Juan PR. The San Juan Bautista Festivity Day was prolonged for 2 days. There were a few races and one include the “Argolla” event, the argolla is a metal ring that was tied with a string along the track at certain distance from the exit line and the goal was to pierce across the argolla or ring with a stick, the rider most keep his horse at the andadura gait and catch the argolla.
Fray Iñigo Abbad write to Spain, commenting of the andadura horses and how that became to be a tradition since the arrival of the spaniards to PR. Also in 1977, French botanical André Pierre Ledrú,after witnesses an andadura race commented of their size and that at young age the horses were train to run at that gait. The andadura is a two biped, lateral gait, compare to paso that is a four biped lateral gait andadura is more of an extreme gait. The sound at you’ll hear instead of the taca-taca taca-taca of te paso fino gait… is pras-pras sound in a very fast tempo.
You could chek at andadurapr.com for more info, I’m a member there. PPR breed is a very versatile kind. They can do almost anything any other breed does but more comfortable for the rider, they are the smoothes ride on earth. One can jump or go fast at paso largo, show at paso fino or go extreme at andadura raising the adrenalin or they can rodeo, use for driving, or to walk to the sunset. Whatever, when ever. PPR Rules!!

Yours is a very kind comment Enduro, thank you, and you’re right about having andadura horses have fun and riders as well. Once they develop that quick-start they just want to do that, they feel free doing so. Most of the riders take that job very seriously and if they lose the race they celebrates the same and make bets for the next race. The andadura race is a very fast growing sport in PR and it’s also a fast growing industry. They call it the extreme sport of the equine disciplines.
It’s always my pleasure Caliber, and thanks to Reuben for brought this interesting thread to the table. Esta raza es la ley! Andadura is a powerful gait you can see it and feel it.
This is a picture of horse at full speed in the andadura gait. They mark from 25 to 30 MPH some times, Extreme isn't?
This other pic is of Residente “Resident” and his owner Willy Soto. Residente it’s considered it as one of the most promising colt on the andadura circuit. Residente is only two years old and measures about 15 hands already, he won his first race competing against one of the fastest andadura stallions of PR.
Willy is a professional photographer and one of my best students’ I proudly say. He trains his own horses and some others as well.
The last pic is Residente ridden here for my son Ruben Jr. at paso corto, Residente is a very special young colt for he has a very nice gait and speed to share, he is a cross between PPR and Standard breed.

Thanks for the info, That helps clairify their history a bit. That's a very nice horse. And it's an interesting trait. I think what I'm seeing is when they hit top largo speed they go into that high speed pace instead of a gallop like most horses do.
One of those someday things I'd love to do is visit PR and see them.
