~* The seven most Common mistake horse owners make *~

The seven most common mistakes horse owners make

Error # 7.  Assuming that any horse could be saddled up and simply ride it.Not every horse is equal. Some of them you can easily ride, others may be more wild or rough and you may become seriously injured if you just had some or none previous experience riding. The most typically easier to ride are the adult, mature horses. They have been rode for longer periods of time and easily tolerate any novice mistake. The young colts are more difficult to ride unless they have been well trained.

Error # 6.  Assuming the technique of a trainer is the only one to train a horse.
When a novice horse owner starts to experiment problems with their horses, they start to look for answers. The first place they look is in the books or with the closest available trainer… when he explains a training technique, the horse owner assumes that this is the way all trainers do it. But when they can’t train their horses with that technique, then they say that the horse is dumb (what he really is it’s a noble brute) they think is an indomitable horse! What horse owners need to know is that there’re many ways to train a horse to do one thing. If one try one technique and doesn’t work then try different one. If he doesn’t know many techniques…poor thing!  Not all horses respond equally to the same training technique.

Error # 5. Not riding the horse enough.
The horse owner may experience some difficulties with their horses not because the horse becomes immediately difficult, stubborn. But because they don’t ride their horses enough, there’re not given enough exercise. The best thing you can do in order to have a better horse is ride it, ride it and ride it. Don’t ride them once every two weeks. Horses need to be ride frequently to make good saddle horses out of them. My grandfather used to tell me, that in his times he would train them with a NAIL, yes, with one of those 6” carpentry nails.  I call it the nail technique. I’ll tell you later how it works.

Error # 4. Believing that a particular problem with the horse is his own fault.
Although, the horse may have any behavior problem, generally is the result of the owner’s handling.  The problem is almost never the horse itself, but the rider. If for example you can’t pass the horse beyond the front gate (this is a type of resistance) perhaps it’s because you don’t have any control over your horse.  You can establish control with some ground work techniques.

Error #3.  Don’t understand how horses think.
The horse doesn’t think like a dog or a cat. Horses are prey animals, which means they run away of whatever scares them. They had that instinct from hundreds of years developed in their brain, innate to “run like hell”. To successfully train them one has to be patient and understand they act by a natural fear instinct.

Error # 2. Don’t recognize that each interaction with the horse is training exercises.
Each time that you interact with your horse you’re training him. Even if your horse is very well trained in the lead rope, you’re still training him each time you lead him by the line. Even when you caress his neck you’re training him. The novice owner has to think of what they’re doing when working with their horses for they may easily affect their horse’s behavior and without knowing it.

Error # 1.  Horse riding with little to no knowledge as a rider.
Normally, a novice horse owner would ride his new horse without having the necessary skills to ride a horse. It’s important to have an understanding of the equitation techniques or how to ride, because horses respond to leg pressure, how you sit on the saddle, if the rider is tense or not and many other things. Be realistic, horses must be understood to be successful with them. The best thing a novice horse owner can do is learn how horses think, learn what things could work good, to mold the horse behavior and understand that constant riding is the best thing they can do in order to have a good saddle horse.

LOS SIETE ERRORES MÁS COMUNES QUE COMETEN LOS DUEÑOS DE CABALLOS

Error # 7.

Si no sabe muchas técnicas....pobrecito!

Thank you Pro!  I find your article to be of extreme importance!

Lately I have heard of so many accidents that could had been prevented if horse owners where responsible. (better word, better educated)

I get petrified when I here people saying, I have not ridden my horse in  over  6 months, and from others you hear 1 year, just got on him/her  took them to a Parade or Trail riding for 2 hours and she/he was a dream.  Shocked   WOW!  what a mistake that could lead to be a deadly one too!

People have to educate themselves better. Is a must for the benefit of both, the horse and the owner.

Saludos!

That's so true!  When horses are not given any excercise for a long period of time and then suddenly took to a trail ride, parade or a show it could lead to a rapid dehydratation or an impact colic.  The excessive sweating makes the horse to lose about 15 gallons of fluid in a single ride. That could cause the loss of potasium and that alone results in a "tying up" or so call... the stomach muscles tying or twisted by spasm or cramps. And that is deadly.

Hi BFF Merry X-Mas!
The nail story is kind of short but humorous…   Once upon a time, (I was about 13 years old ) my grandpa growled me about a mare that I took back to the paddock after rode her for 20 or 30 minutes.  I try to explain to him that it was plenty of exercise for the mare and had enough fun.  He then took a deep sigh and frowned as a disapproval gesture towards my replying.  He told me to follow him and I did without a word.  My grandpa was the kindest person I’ve ever know, he was like Santa Claus kind of temper but for that same reason everyone was very respectful to him; specially me!

So back to the rancho we went and he look into a drawer in the tack room for a 6” nail and put it in my hand and told me to ride that mare with the nail or to never ride her again.  I was so confuse and I didn’t want to argue and been disrespectful to my grandpa, but I also wanted to keep riding that particular mare that my grandpa aloud no one except me to rode.  I was the envy of my cousins and I wanted to keep it that way.  So I decide to armed myself with courage and ask grandpa what he means by ride the mare with the nail.  He didn’t answer me, instead he went back to the tack room and grabbed a hammer that later puts in my hands and told me to nail it in the “Higuerillo” tree next to the mares’ paddock.

I obey faster than a 65 MPH speed limit and then said “ya” done to my grandpa in expectance of an explanation about what I had donned.  Grandpa then explains that after I rode the mare hang her by the headstall rains on the 6” nail now 3” nailed to the Higuerillo tree.   Do my duties and rode the mare again and when came back, hang it by the rains on the nail again and so on.  On that moment I fully understand what he means by train with a nail.  What he was saying was to give enough exercise to the mare and that is a bad practice to ride a horse for a few minutes for that is not enough time to teach noting or warm their muscles’ sufficient.
My grandpas’ generation had a particular way to teach but somehow its stocks in one’s mind.  That the story of the nail, and that’s how you train a horse with a 6” nail.

Most persons I told about the nail training method, they thougth of it as a barbaric cruel way to train horses.  Dissapointed?

Pro!  how interesting how our brain works!  lol I first saw the word "NAIL" and I have to be the first one to admit, my eyes went " Shocked"  LOL!

But one minute later I said to myself, nahhhhhh.....  their is no way!
Glad i was not disappointed!

Thanks for sharing!

Not disappointed at all. Thank you so much for sharing! I think your grandpa sounds like he was a smart guy.

My first thought was he used the nail to make a mark for how many times he rode the horse  Smile

I'm glad you like the story guys, for it's something I treasure as good memories from my beloved grandfather. He was wise more than he was smart BFF. One can tell the difference when you realize how much one can learn from others experience in live.

He use to ride from early daybreak to keep controlled the farm and they go back to the house at dawn on those times. They didn't take of the saddle until then.  I am pro-horse, so the first thing in mind is the wellbeing of the horse and a method of using a nail in order to train a horse is metaphorical, but I’m cracking laughing each time I saw the expression on the face when I told somebody about the nail method.  This time was no exception!
