Nikki NewsI need to get some new pics of Nikki. I did get these items yesterday. She was barking like a madwoman in the back yard, so I went out to see what she had cornered. A Mole Kingsnake! (and yes Jane, I thought of you when I decided to post, and disguised the thread as a "cute puppy" update).
These snakes eat rodents, toads and other snakes...occasionally grashoppers, and are not poisonous. They are actually quite docile. In the west and midwest, I think they call them Prairie Kingsnakes.
In the upper right hand, watch for the tail rattle. Most snakes do this as a warning.

"Beautiful" snake ?????????? Are you people completely mad? Next thing you know, I'll be reading about a "beautiful tarantula" here! *eyes rolling dramatically*
Fortunately for me, your video wouldn't play. Ha ha!
Editing to add: if I saw that in my backyard, I'd jump so far you'd find me in the next county!

It is a pretty snake, actually....and if you don't like mice and other snakes, king snakes can help keep the population down. I took the puppy inside, so it could get away. I don't usually kill snakes in my yard. If they're poisonous, I'll get someone else to though, but I've never seen a poisonous one.

You know how I bitch and complain about the cold here in the winter? Well, it serves one VERY good purpose: no snakes. I have never seen a snake in the Edmonton area. (Someone told me once that there are garter snakes here, but I don't believe them. *grin* And there certainly are NOT any poisonous snakes here.)
They have poisonous snakes in southern Alberta, but that's a long way from here (Alberta is the same size as Texas) ... and obviously I don't (and won't) live there!

No snake is safe here around my place, too many copperheads around here so I don't think twice before killing any snake I see here. I will agree though that yours is a pretty snake and since you knew forsure 100% that it was a safe one I think you did a good thing letting it live.Your friend,Moniece
