Interesting Article

I wanted to share this article here, as I think it offers an interesting perspective on the breed, from the point of view of a young man who honestly cares about this breed. His first language is Spanish, so please give him the benefit of the doubt if you have questions about his message. He did his best to translate for us, and we all know how difficult that can be, when it comes to breed specific terminology.

I am also posting it in Spanish, for those who are more comfortable with that version.

Hi to everyone.

I tried to translate this message, so you can understand it better, it takes time it is not easy for me but I did my best, so you can enjoy it, and make your own opinion too. Sorry for this awful English.

Please look at the difference I wanted to express between Tame and Train. (doma y entrenamiento)

I have always asked what is truly the job of the trainer, “montador” and how the experience of it affects the performance of a horse in the show ring. I have seen constantly trainers, that truly do no more work than to tire the horse, take them side to side (flex), etc. Nothing that I would describe, as getting the horse used to the activity of being ridden. I have really not found a trainer that expresses what the art of riding horse is.

The Colombian fan/owner, and paso fino in general; has become dependent on the trainer, a horse can not BE without the trainer. When we prepare the budget, the cost of a trainer is always included, as one more expense included in the total expense of owning the animal. This is a problem.

The first duty of a trainer, is that of being a tamer: who assures really that the job that is being done is durable and truly a good one? The taming requires time, that could be the biggest problem and the reason why the fans do not dare to learn how to manage their own animals. Then the trainer’s job is understandable in this case.

In second place, the trainer is a CONSTANT trainer of the animal after taming: the animal must be trained showing the best qualities. My question is “where is the initial training, the first job of training, when the trainer must be constantly polishing the horse riding it, teaching again, while the owner and fan watches the results sitting every week. Where is the enjoyment? Is like Michelangelo coming to finish again and again the Sistine Chapel.

Now the most worriesome problem: reading an article titled “Defensa del Trote y el Galope Colombiano “ (pasofinotv.com) I find: “An intelligent horse learns in the hands of a master more than a gait, but the appropriate nutrition, physical conditioning and “brio”, are the aids that the trainer requires for the best expression of movement that the animal possesses in his genetic makeup to express”. Showing some preoccupation with this I ask: “Which horse truly wins in the show ring? The best tamed and trained horse, or the one that truly shows his genetic ability and naturalness?”

Is the real problem that we can see today in the show ring, horses qualified to show in the show ring by a few minutes, but are horses that can’t really be ridden? The fan/owner disturbed with the cost and the illusion of getting a blue ribbon in the show ring, is guilty of being the cause of this situation. We have put away the naturally gaited horses to support “qualified” horses that give us a small show in the show ring, but that are less for it. We are dedicated to paying high price stud fees, adoring those animals, without questioning whether their quality lies in their ability and genetics, or with their trainer.

How to find then the solution of what I call the biggest problem in the Colombian Paso Fino horse breeding.

That's what it's all about...learning from one another, and respecting one another!  That is the best way to show our respect to the breed! Very Happy
cristy

That article is SOOO true!  At times I wonder how much smoke and mirrors are in the showring.

Very well said.  Thanks!
