Cool! But did the anuncer said only 5 gaited horses in the world?

That is correcto! and that is an incorreto statement! but then again! if you look and hear of the horror statements said in this country about our own breed...... we are not far behind! LOL!

I know what you mean, specially by the judges at the ppr shows.

I thought he was talking about the five gaits of the Icelandic horse.
Quote:
Walk, an even four-beat cadence, moving each foot independently.
Trot, a two-beat gait, with the front and back legs on opposite sides moving together.
Canter, a three-beat gait, also called gallop.
Tolt, an amazingly smooth four-beat traveling gait, where all four feet move in the same pattern as in the walk, with higher action and more speed. This gait is often performed with full mugs of beer.
The Flying Pace, a two-beat gait where front and hind legs on the same side move forward and back at the same time. This can go up to 35 mph! The gait of the gods!
Well I have owned 5 Icelandic horses and I love them! They have the most wonderful temperament and you have to admit they have the "Cutesie" factor all over them! I showed 2 of my Iceys at the all breed show in Dillsburg PA.( one the largest Icelandic shows in North America).
They don't do well in hot climates and that is the only reason I don;t own one right now! I am living in Florida. There are some here in Florida and I had one US bred Icey that was born in Texas and one from California that did pretty well in this hot weather.
They are very forward moving under saddle and are a BLAST to ride! The tolt is very smooth if you get one that is a "Natural" tolter. They are mostly the Pleasure horse type. I had 2 that were natural tolters and my favorite one got Heeves down here in FL so I just recently sold him to a lady in PA. She loves him!
Here are some pics of Thor my favorite Icey. I sure do miss him..... I am great at riding them but not as good on Pasos....a whole diffenent way of riding!
THis is Thor....such a cutie!
I used Thor to pony my young pasos and his gait was just the right speed
Here is Thor and I at the Dillsburg show....
And he was a wonderful driving horse too!
I would have to say he was the best horse I ever owned. I would have never sold him if he could live in Florida. If I needed to go anywhere on a group ride, show whatever he was the one I trusted whole heartedly.

Thank you so much for sharing! wow! great pictures and information too! I just learned how sensitive they are to our climate!Thanks....
Also, I respect the fact you said "US BRED ICEY" instead of, The American Icey! shows your knowledge and respect for the breed!
Saludos!

The Icelandic is a breed to respect. There are a lot of breeders in US that import some mares and a Stallion and set up a breeding program of Icelandic horses. There used to be a couple farms over there that would help you get set up in your breeding program. These US born Iceys have more resistance to insects and pollen since they are born here where we have all that stuff. Icelandics are known to get "summer Itch" and they will rub off their manes and tails if it isn;t gotten under control. It is an allergy to insect bites. Mine had allergies to dust and pollen but no summer itch(he was born in Canada). Eventually the allergies led to heeves which actually is very common here in Fl with horses coming down here from the northern climate. None of my other horses coming from the north got these allergies though. I even body clipped him to help him cool down....he had a problem cooling down. Their coats are very thick and almost like 2 layers. He killed all my clippers till I got a pair of sheep shearing ones....that did the trick!
Icelandics are a very primitive breed also and take a lot of training. They are not usually started till 4 years old....very slow to mature both mentally and physically. In this they are similar to the Paso Fino which also matures slowly but Pasos can be ridden younger and to me are much easier to train.
Once an Icelandic leaves Iceland he can never return. This keeps the breed pure and also prevents diseases from entering the country.
Here is another Icelandic I owned. Flash was born in Texas from 2 imported Icelandics. He didn;t get as thick a coat as Thor and was more tolerant of the heat. No allergies.....should have kept him...he was so CUTE! I made this costume for our 4th of July parade in PA. Flash and I took first in the pony class.
