The paso fino was paso fino before plywood was known.
Our forefathers knew what to look for, select for in the breeding shed without a sounding board. Gait was bred and judged on the DIRT.

I doubt we disagree. It is a misunderstanding about what to look for that makes a paso fino a paso fino.
My point is the board is not the criterion and we are making it so.
My point is that most newcomers rely on ONE thing and without it, they know NOTHING about what gait is.
Now those newcomers are our judges and what is it that they NEED to know gait?
I love the sounding board but is a tool no more. It is not the ONLY tool but one of many because the paso fino is NOT only about isochronic footfall but MORE.
It is an insult to our breed to diminish the superlatives of what makes it great.

I love the board and most paso finos do too. Many love to hear themselves taca taca along.
The shame is too many rely on this to determine breeding criteria and performance criteria. When you visit training barns and watch a trainer do nothing but put a horse on the board so many times until the horse is sick and tired of it, sick of being corrected, sick of being pushed, you'd be upset too.
It is a shame that our trainers can no longer feel the gait through their hands, legs, and seat. It is a shame that we have "breeders" that only parrot what is told to them about what is paso fino. They have no clue and now are propogating our generation of horses. They claim they can't "see" gait. No one has taught them. They would have to learn the way of their fore fathers to know. Who is teaching them?
It is a sad state of affairs to watch a horse ONLY gait when he is on the board. Why? Watch how the riders adjust themselves to prepare for the board. Instead of riding the horse all the time they only ride for that one moment.
There's no original thought about how our horses are judged. I've seen the same pattern at Mundials, Puerto Rico and now PFHA judges are nothing but robots.
We talk about "expression" with our horses. The board erases the very thing that distinquishes this horse from all others the way it is used now. If the use went back to its original purpose, it would be even MORE exciting than you know.
Yeah, many think the without the board the show is boring and it is. That's because the tests are not used to bring out the EXPRESSION of the paso fino breed. How many breeds can reverse in consecutive turns? How many can stop, stand square, high head, ears flickering, ready but like a rock? Do you SEE that? No you don't. The reverses are unindentifiable, the halts make our horses look unruly.
How many breeds watch for every nuance of expression in their gait. We do. We did. That is the birthright of the paso fino horse.
(besides if I don't burn the board I can't have my marshmellow sandwiches)
