I am currently attending Virginia Intermont College, which is an equestrian school. they are big into dressage and hunters and you can pretty much say they are the best in the country. Here's the thing though.. I come here and i said i jumped my paso and they told me i was stupid for doing such a thing and it is dangerous. They treat me like I dont know anything because I rode a gaited horse. they put me on old plugs because they dont think that i can ride a horse with a little bit of energy. We went on a trail ride for one of my classes yesterday and i finally got to ride a thoroughbred and she was a little spooky and my instructor was flipping out on me saying you better hold on tight. How can we change what these people think about people who ride pasos and about the paso breed? something has to be done. The funny thing is the one who told me jumping a paso is dangerous is the instructor who teaches hunter lessons at a local paso farm around here... Please.. we need to do something about this.. I wish i could bring my gelding here that jumps to show them the truth.. but the board is way to expensive and with his rearing problem i would most likely be told do not ride here.

Most of the time, you can't change anyone else's mind.  The only thing you can do, is make your own way.  You can still learn from someone you disagree with...I've yet to meet anyone who taught me nothing, even if it's a lesson on how to be gracious in the company of fools.

I think bringing your paso gelding with a rearing problem, would only justify what they already think about the breed in general.  Even though all breeds have horses with the same issue, they'd automatically blame the problem on his paso breeding.

Hang in there.  I think if you let go of your frustration about what other people think, you'll learn a lot about horsewomanship...I really do!

BTW...welcome to PasoVoice!!!  You can always come here when you need to be with people who "get it" about the breed.  We all hear it too, we just know what the rest of the world is missing out on!

o trust me ive learned alot here already just within my first couple months. that is the whole reason for me not bringing my gelding. He only rears during mounting now and has gotten better but still not the point. I want to bring a 2 1/2 year old colt that wouldnt hurt a fly to prove them wrong but.. of course no stallions or colts allowed. You might recognize me from American Paso Finos. I havent been on there in forever but I was El Indio Elegante.
My whole reason for coming here is to learn how to PROPERLY take care of the horses and market the pasos. The breed is honestly falling apart and I refuse to let it. If i get the chance I would actually like to breed trail pasos and work on their versatility to prove to people they arent what they think they are. Its a big job.. but I refuse to not succeed in it.

I knew who you were...and again, welcome.  I think your goals as far as the breed are concerned are admirable.  I also like the way you are going about it.  Learning about other breeds and disciplines will only help you with your real love...the Paso Horse!

Unfortunatley, people won't usually listen...you just have to show them.  It may be that you are never able to win over those particular people, but you will win over people who are open minded, and those are the best caretakers of the breed in the long run.  Just focus on enjoying your true love, and the rest will follow.

narrowmindedness is usually a result of lack of a broad education.   Unfortunatly some of the worst narrowminded can be found in some of the highest educated persons in the schools.   I think it's still the result of lack of a broad education,  a high level of education and a broad education are two different things.  Trying to educate those who consider themselves already well educated is frequently futile.  Although it may be hard to do it'd probably be best to just hold yer peace, learn what ya can,  and never mind the lack of knowlege concerning paso fino's.   And if ya ever get just the right chance casually do something with a paso fino that they don't expect to see and act liike it's every day stuff.  But if ya don't get the chance never mind.
I am one who's been educated in a great variety of things but I never went any further than high school in official education.  (actually I didn't have much high school, just passed the GED with very high score when I was 18,  still havn't gone back to get my diploma and it's been 26 years,  don't think I'll ever need it)  I just started reading when I learned to read and I'm still at it,  I love technical stuff.  I'm digging into stuff on subatomic particles,  zero point energy,  and discovering things that make modern science look awfully weak and riddled with errors.  But I don't care if all those professors in the big schools get wise or not,  I can run far beyond them and do things they think is imposible.
It's the independant thinkers who invented the things we use every day after being told it was imposible.
