LESLIE - Two horses with special needs found a new home this morning with the Spencer family.

Story by:ROD SANFORD/Lansing State Journal

Kristen Spencer and husband, Tony, trailed by son Chace, 7, lead the family's new horses, Serenity (left) and Scout, to their stables and home in Leslie. The two special needs horses will be cared for by the Spencer family as part of a "lifetime lease" through the International League for the Protection of Horses-Michigan.

The International League for the Protection of Horses-Michigan delivered the horses to the home of Kristen Spencer, of Leslie, who began working with the animals in September as a group volunteer.

She said she bonded instantly with Serenity, an 18-year-old quarter horse mare with a spine curvature problem, and Scout, a 19-year-old paint gelding with a vision disorder.

ILPH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare, rescue and rehabilitation of horses and the education of horse owners.

Group officials said they've found new homes for 14 horses this year.
