Greetings to everyone from the American Trote & Trocha Association...Wishes
of health and blessings in the New Year!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends:
First of all, I hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday.
The IPHF recently held their first US National Show in Jacksonville, FL this past
November 7th.- 9th.  The diagonals had the opportunity to compete horses in the
different modalities of Trote y Galope and Trocha.  There were no entries for the
Trocha y Galope division.  IPHF has the rule, that a judge is not required to place
a horse, or  may vote to leave a position vacant, if the horse does not perform
to the level as outlined by the criteria of the class.  Even though some of the
participants were not placed in their respective classes, the judges were very complimentary
to the efforts of the exhibitors and praised their efforts in promoting and launching
the diagonals in the United States.
In the Trocha division, it is good to recognize that a Schooling colt, Boreas GL
was presented by Mr. Jose Ochoa and owned by Mr. Lee Vulgaris. This colt was awarded
IPHF National Champion. The main reason for me to feature this accomplishment is
because this horse is in the process of training and even though the horse is presently
registered with PFHA, this opportunity that IPHF and ATTA gave the horse, Boreas
has been able to start gaining show experience, developing a show career and allowing
both the trainer and the owner the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their efforts.
The judge who explained this competition was very complimentary in the qualities
of the horse.  Later on I had a chance to speak to Mr. Vulgaris and he was not only
happy for his accomplishment but his comment was and I quote "He (the horse) is
so happy now that we are allowing him to work in Trocha and not trying to force
the "Paso Fino gait". End quote. (Read more about the show in the IPHF Newsletter
further down)
I hope that this is just one example of why, you the members need to support as
many activities where the diagonals have an opportunity to participate. In a perfect
world, you may want things or events to be held more like you see it best.  The
individuals currently trying to promote and get involved in creating events to open
the door for the diagonals are limited to their efforts and the funds available
to do so.  As president, I encourage you to get involved and participate.  It does
not matter what organization does, there will be no future without your involvement.
IPHF is planning on hosting shows in 2009 in different areas of the US.  If you
are an ATTA member that would like to assist those areas please let Lori Perez,
Diego Bravo or myself know.  We will put you in contact with those individuals.
 Currently, in the MS area, you may call Jaime Gascon; in the NC area call Startown
Stables/Lisa Dwyer (J.C. Iriarte's fiancé), in the MO area, Mr. Rick Meyer or Beth
Uelsmann.
Another update is in regards to the request of being the second board representative
to the United States in Confepaso by hosting the second seat through ATTA.  Due
to the resignation of Mr. CJ Marcello as Confepaso President, and the fact that
the committee established in Medellin, Colombia to review the information submitted
by ATTA for approval, had not given ATTA a response; this issue at hand, has been
postponed for voting until this transition to a new President is settled and the
amendments that had been proposed to make the approval possible are voted and approved
by the Confepaso Board of Directors. The secretary of Confepaso, Willman Rodriguez,
notified me by phone, that Confepaso will let ATTA know for the next meeting, so
that we can attend to hear their decision. The ATTA seat should not be voted on
at this upcoming meeting in Puerto Rico.  I remain hopeful that both Confepaso
and PFHA will consider this opportunity to represent the interests of the United
States by joining forces and helping the Paso Breed continue to grow here in the
US.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CONFEPASO UPDATE!!!! & MORE
Another year is almost gone.  I wish all of you a Happy Holiday season and a Prosperous
2009. A few things have happened since the last president's message (above) involving
ATTA or activities for the diagonals.
At the Confepaso meeting on December 4, the Board of Directors voted to give back
to PFHA its second seat.  PFHA will remain the vehicle by which any Paso Association
in the United States will be represented at the Confepaso meetings.  ATTA has the
right to send a member to the Confepaso meetings to assist the two delegates, if
an issue needs to be presented.  Permission will have to be asked for in writing
to Confepaso and the PFHA delegates.  PFHA claims that it is going to open up sanctioned
classes for the diagonals.  This is something that ATTA will have to wait and see,
since in the PFHA rulebook and constitution, no other modalities can be promoted
by them.  We will see what their new administration will or will not be able to
do.
Tobon Paso Fino Studio hosted its final show of the 2008 circuit and Jaime Franco
won the High Point Award for the Trote y Galope riding La Llave de la Luisa. CONGRATULATIONS!
On December 30, the IPHF (International Paso Horse Federation) will be participating
in the Citrus Bowl Parade in Orlando, FL.  There will be a few Trote y Galope horses
as part of the group.  IPHF has a 30 second spot on national TV to showcase our
beautiful Paso show horses.  We invite you to watch the parade.
Looking into 2009, if you have any activities or demos you plan to participate,
please send the information to Lori Perez, so we can let the other members know
so they can get involved.  As I mentioned in the last news, ATTA needs you to get
involved on a local level and support the activities members around you provide.
 2009 seems to be a challenging year with the economy, so we need to come together
to continue to promote the diagonals in the United States.
Best wishes and God Bless,
Carlos Tobon - ATTA President

A big thank you to all who competed at this event. The ATTA was honored to be asked
by the IPHF to participate. The show was professionally presented in a way that
truly honored the caliber of the horses that were there. It was well organized,
exciting & entertaining! (Tommie Turvey was truly  amazing & the Cowboy
Shooting - well just awesome.)

The parade of flags was a big hit both nights. In addition to many beautiful Paso Finos that were ridden not only
by the Youth, but by the professionals, there were two Trote y Galope stallions.
Bolero who is Palomino represented the United States and Emperador a handsome Liver
Chestnut represented Colombia!  We are so proud of Debbie Wolkowicks (Reserve World
Silver Medalist 2008 Youth Mundial!), she trilled us all as she rode "Bolero" who
is owned by Jackie McDaniel & Tres Martin, and Mr. Diego Bravo who rode "Emperador"
really got the crowd excited. Everyone was yelling out, having fun and cheering the riders on. Emperador is proudly owned by Criadero  Hidalgo.

I am very pleased to see an organization that is working for the breed not against it.  Something that has taken the PFHA 36 years to realize of their wrong interpretation and the correct definition of this breed!!!!!!

Lori, I have a question, I was under the understanding that any horse  PFHA papered will loose their PFHA if received ATTA registry, I am right.

I'm a little unclear about the rules of participation for this show.  Do they not require a horse to be registered, to compete in a class?  If the horse is PFHA registered, then for all intents and purposes it is not registered for the Trocha classes.  Can you please clarify this Lori?

All the competition rules are on the IPHF website (see link above)

C. Grand National Competition.
The Board selects the date and location of the National Championship Competition at least two years prior to that competitions commencement. Judges are selected by the Board of Directors from a list of qualified judges supplied by the Judges Committee. All National judges shall be certified by a Confepaso affiliated association. Judges are prohibited from judging two consecutive National Championships. National judges must be in good standing with IPHF at the time of selection, and at the time of the National competition. The national competition is an open event for all horses registered with any association recognized by Confepaso. There are no qualifying points required to enter the competition. All competitors must be members of IPHF in good standing at the time of entry and through the competition dates.
D. Competition Modalities.
IPHF offers Paso Fino (pleasure, performance, and fino), Trocha, Trote Galope, and Trocha Galope. IPHF also offers equitation competitions for youth riders based on international rules. The Trocha, Trote Galope and Trocha Galope classes will be conducted pursuant to Confepaso rules.

I can not tell you what PFHA intentions are.
